Everything You Need To Know About 7 Way Round Trailer Wiring Diagrams

Trailer wiring diagrams are an important piece of knowledge to safely operate your trailer and its components. Wiring diagrams provide an easy way to make certain all aspects of a trailer are connected correctly. A 7 way round trailer wiring diagram can be used to accurately diagnose electrical connections for any kind of trailer, specifically those used for hauling goods.

No matter your trailer type, a 7 way round trailer wiring diagram will make wiring up the trailer easier and safer. Where do you start? Let’s explore the basics of 7 way round lighting wiring diagrams!

Understanding The 7 Way Round Connector

7 way round connectors aren’t difficult to understand; in fact, they work just like normal pin-out connections except with an additional two wires for reverse light control and running light control. When wired correctly, these wires provide a secure connection for the trailer stopping, turning and starting lights to the car or truck’s lights.

As the name explains, there are seven total pins grouped into a round configuration on the connector. Each pin is labeled from 1 through 7 and designated for a different purpose. Knowing which pins correspond to which functions is essential for proper wiring.

1 - Stop / Turn Lights

The first pin, labeled 1, is the connection point for stop light and turn signal wires. When properly wired this pin allows the car’s or truck’s lighting system to synchronize with the trailer’s turn signals and braking system.

2 - Auxiliary Power Supply, Accessory Power

Pin 2 is the auxiliary or accessory power. This connection triggers when the key is turned to “on/run” or “start”. This pin supplies power for devices that require constant power even when the key is removed.

3 - Ground Connection

The third pin, Pin 3, is the ground. The ground is necessary for most lighting and safety systems in order to operate correctly. Connecting the ground to the vehicle via Pin 3 ensures the proper distribution of power from the car or truck to the trailer and all its associated devices.

4 - Right Turn Signals/ Brakes

Pin 4 connects the signal wire for the right turn signals/brake lights. This wire provides the signal to activate the right turn signal on the car and gives the trailer’s right hand stop and turn signals connection to the car.

5 - Left Turn Signals/ Brakes

The fifth pin is the left hand turn signal. This wire makes the connection from the car to the left side of the trailer. It also provides a power source for the trailers’s left turn signal, allowing it to operate in sync with the cars.

6 - Reverse Lights

Pin 6 is for the reverse lights on the trailer. This connection sends a signal to the car or truck that lets it know that there is a trailer behind you, so the driver can adjust accordingly. Pin 6 is typically labeled “reverse” and is indicated as such on most wiring diagrams.

7 - Running Lights (Optional)

The seventh and final pin, Pin 7, is for running lights. This connection supplies the trailer with power while the car or truck is in “key on" or “run” mode. This connection is typically labeled “running” and can be seen clearly displayed on 7 way round trailer wiring diagrams.

Securely Wiring Your Trailer With 7 Way Round Lighting Wiring Diagrams

Now that you know the basics of 7 way round lighting wiring diagrams, you can move forward with safely installing your trailer’s electrical components. Using the appropriate diagram for your trailer type is essential to ensure a secure connection where power is going where it needs to go. Don't forget to check for continuity and test the connections with a multi-meter before finalizing the installation. With the right wiring diagram and some patience, you can quickly get your trailer equipped with proper lighting and safety features.
