It controls the current that passes through the light fixtures and prevents the circuit from overloading and causing a potential fire hazard.

When installing lighting with a ballast, the first part that needs to be determined is the circuit breaker size and wattage. The black and white wires are always connected to the appropriate socket within the wall; the black wire being connected to the “Hot” side, which is usually the one with the tag line attached. Circuit 2 is the bypass circuit, meaning that it is used by the ballast to detect whether or not the lighting has been trimmed on or off from the previous circuit.

  • Start with connecting all lighting fixtures together and a jumper wire to each one.

  • Connect one end of the pigtail to the ballast and the other to the bypass circuit.

  • Wire the white wire to the neutral terminal.

  • Wire the ground wire found on the fixture to the ground terminal on the ballast.
