Understanding the Basics of Soft Starter Wiring Diagrams

What is a Soft Starter?


A soft starter is an electronic device that is used in the start-up process of motors. When used, the soft starter reduces the amount of current supplied to the motor at start-up, slowly increasing it until the desired speed and torque is reached. This prevents strain on the motor, reducing the possibility of sparking. Although there are many types of soft starters, the most common is the "three phase" type, which uses three separate connections from the main power source to the motor.

The Components of a Soft Starter Wiring Diagram


Soft starter wiring diagrams generally include the following components:


  • Main power supply (mains)

  • Start capacitor

  • Soft starter circuit

  • Ground fault circuit interrupt

  • Control lines



The main power supply is typically connected to the incoming electricity supply, such as the local power grid or generator. From there, the power is passed through the start capacitor, which is responsible for slightly reducing the voltage during the startup phase, providing the soft starter with a more manageable level of current to work with. The soft starter circuit then connects to the motor, controlling the amount of power sent to it as it starts up. The ground fault circuit interrupt (GFCI) is a safety measure that will shut down the motor if a ground fault occurs, preventing potential fires. Finally, the control lines connect to the controller of the soft starter, allowing it to be adjusted and monitored.

Understanding Soft Starter Wiring Diagrams


Soft starter wiring diagrams are designed to take the guesswork out of installing the correct electrical components. Although wiring diagrams can be intimidating at first, the symbols used to represent each component make it easy to determine what wires should be connected to each other. Once you have a good understanding of the symbols used, you can easily match the wires according to the diagram and get the motor up and running in no time. Once everything is installed, additional safety measures, such as protection relays, can be set up as needed.
