Hot Water Cylinder Wiring Diagrams: Understanding the Basics



Having hot water available in our homes and places of work is essential, with few people wanting to have to rely on cold water from the tap. The hot water cylinder is a key part of many homes and provides the ability to heat up water for showers, baths, and other purposes. Wiring diagrams are needed to ensure that the hot water cylinder is properly connected and maintained.   • Connectors

  • Circuit Breakers

  • Switches

  • Wire Connectors

  • Resistors



These five components are represented by symbols within the wiring diagram, each symbol representing one of the aforementioned components as explained above. The symbols also contain arrows and lines which indicate how one component is connected to another. When looking at the diagram, these arrows and lines make up the majority of the diagram and are important when reading how the components are connected.



Color Codes



The second aspect to consider when reading wiring diagrams for hot water cylinders is the usage of color codes. Color coding makes it easier to read the wiring diagrams and determines which wire is connected to different components. A typical color code that is used includes the following colors:
























Color Function
Red Positive current flow (Power)
Black Negative current flow (Ground)
White Neutral wire
Yellow Signal wire or potentially power

Terminal Numbers

For instance, a switch labeled 'A2' means it is connected to terminal '2' of the component labeled 'A' within the wiring diagram.
