Gigabit Ethernet is a form of computer networking wired with copper cables that are connected by physical devices. To achieve this speed and power, Gigabit Ethernet is wired using Category 5 or Category 6 copper cables bundling several wires together using insulation and shielding. These cables have eight wires along with a special 9th wire which is used as grounding.



Types of Wiring Diagrams



The wiring diagram of Gigabit Ethernet is an electrical diagram that illustrates how the Ethernet cable is wired. The wiring diagram contains two types of diagrams such as straight-through and crossover. In straight-through wiring diagram contains all of the wires run along one side of the cable. It often utilizes color-coded wires to identify its individual pairs. While in crossover wiring diagram the wires crisscross from one end of the cable to the other end, which allows direct communication from one device to another.



Both diagrams are typically illustrated with diagrams showing the wires paired together, their color code and the pin order. Following a wiring diagram is important to plugging in an Ethernet cable correctly.



Key Considerations



When installing a Gigabit Ethernet cable, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind. The Category 5 or 6 wiring must be RJ45 output, meaning all the wires should be 8 pins and they should be punched down in the same order. Secondly, when connecting the wires, make sure to use the appropriate punch down tool. Punching wires down too hard or too loosely can lead to a poor connection and can cause signal loss. Lastly, be sure to test the connection to ensure it transmits at the desired speed and no more than 1% packet errors.
