What is a 120 Volt Wiring Diagram?

This type of wiring diagram is used for residential wiring projects and home appliance installations, as well as applications that require 120-volt power. On a 120-volt wiring diagram, the symbol for a wire is typically indicated by a straight line with a small circle on each end.



In addition to showing the connections of the wires, the 120-volt wiring diagram will also typically describe the general purpose of the wire, such as whether it is carrying an alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC), as well as the color and any other labeling.



What is a 240 Volt Wiring Diagram?



A 240-volt wiring diagram is slightly more complex than a 120-volt diagram. It is still used to show how wires connect, but it has twice the voltage of a single-phase circuit, meaning that it requires two hot wires. To represent the two hot wires, the 240-volt diagram will use a “Y” shape.



However, when compared to a 120-volt diagram, using a 240-volt wiring diagram requires additional information. For example, the two hot wires must be tied together, while the neutral and ground wires must be tied to separate terminals.
