A Guide To Understanding 3 Wire Pt100 Sensor Wiring Diagrams

In many industrial and commercial settings, wiring diagrams are a practical necessity. Without these diagrams to guide them, technicians and workers would have a much more difficult time navigating complex systems. The 3 wire PT100 sensor is one of the most versatile and commonly used sensors, and understanding a PT100 wiring diagram is invaluable when trying to ensure optimal performance from a PT100-based system.

Before we dive into the details of 3 wire PT100 sensor wiring diagrams, it’s important to understand a few basics about what the diagrams represent. A wiring diagram is a map of the physical connections of electrical wires between two or more electronic components. Every component within the circuit is represented in the diagram, with lines connecting each element. Through analysis of a wiring diagram, it’s possible to gain insight into the behavior of an existing circuit as well as the path for constructing a new circuit.

Powering Up The PT100 Sensor

When wiring a 3 wire PT100 sensor, being mindful of how power is applied will go a long way towards optimizing the circuit. The 3 wires that connect to the PT100 sensor are usually labelled VCC, GND, and SIG. VCC is the voltage source, and GND is the ground reference. Together, these two wires power the sensor. SIG stands for signal, and this output wire will provide a signal indicative of the temperature reading from the sensor. Without power, the sensor will not produce a signal, so making sure these two pins are well connected to a voltage source is key.

Connecting Different Types of Loads

With power established to the PT100 sensor, different types of loads can be connected for varying purposes. Generally speaking, PNP transistors and NPN transistors are used in order to convert the PT100's electrical signal into either a digital or analog format. A PNP or NPN transistor is responsible for connecting and disconnecting an appropriate load based on certain predetermined conditions. For example, a PNP transistor with a PT100 sensor may indicate a “low level” when the sensed temperature is low, and a “high level” when it is high. Once the load is determined, the connections to the base, collector, and emitter of the transistor will be included in the PT100 wiring diagram.

Common Applications of 3 Wire PT100 Sensors

The incredible versatility of PT100 sensors make them the go-to solution for a number of commercial and industrial applications. These sensors are useful for monitoring temperature in mostly closed systems, such as water heaters, engines, and other appliances. Automobile manufacturers often employ these sensors in order to more accurately target the temperature range required for efficient operation of an engine. Industrial processes that require precise temperature management are also aided by these 3 wire sensors.

Conclusion

3 wire PT100 sensors are extremely common in both commercial and industrial applications, and their versatility provides insight into a number of bodily temperatures and conditions. When using a 3 wire PT100 sensor, knowing how to interpret the wiring diagram is essential for understanding the connectivity and function of the system. Applying the right voltage and connecting the appropriate load is all part of the fun, and having a good wiring diagram as a reference is a must when unlocking the potential of the sensor.
