Everything You Need to Know about Relay Wiring Diagram Symbols

Understanding the proper wiring symbols for a relay diagram is essential when it comes to successfully setting up and connecting together a complex electrical system. In order to ensure that all components in the system are connected correctly, motors and other devices need to be able to establish a secure connection and properly receive power in order to operate properly. The use of a wiring diagram can help to provide the guidance of how these components need to be combined and wired in order for the system to work correctly.

Relay wiring diagrams make it much easier for technicians to identify various electrical parts and connections within a system. Without the use of such diagrams, a technician would have to rely on guesswork and instinct to figure out which components were related and which wires were needed for completing the job. Many times, these diagrams can save valuable time and money, since the technician can easily locate and trace out the exact wires needed to test or repair any given system.

The Basics of a Wiring Diagram

A relay wiring diagram works similarly to a normal electrical wiring diagram. Electrical symbols and labels are used to denote what type of component is being represented. Most components in a hardware system are highlighted on the board with different colors, to make them easier to identify amongst the many wires, relays and connectors available. It’s important to note that there are multiple types of wiring diagrams available – such as a circuit and a line diagram – depending upon what kind of system is being wired.

The basic concept behind any wiring diagram is the same. You will see a number of symbols that represent specific components and these symbols are often supplemented by lines and numbers that may show the flow of electric signals between different components in the system. While some diagrams may be more complex than others, the essential components remain the same.

Common Relay Wiring Diagram Symbols

The following is a list of common symbols that are frequently used for electrical relays:

  • Circular arrow – indicates an electric current through a closed loop

  • Triangle – shows a control point or relay

  • +/- signs – for connecting switches and indicators

  • 3-prong plug/socket – for connecting an electronically controlled device

  • Crossed tools – indicates cutting or disconnecting a circuit

  • Diagonal arrows – indicating electric flow between 2 points

  • Dash – showing the presence of a wire

These symbols are often used together to depict the complete system of how different components are connected, with the specific purpose of each symbol clarified through a simple key on the bottom or side of the drawing.

Important Safety Considerations

When working with relay wiring diagrams, it’s essential to be aware of safety precautions. Before connecting any wires, always verify that all circuits are off and unplugged. Keep in mind that there are different voltages of relays and read any instructions that come with the product before beginning your project. Finally, make sure that all wires are properly insulated.

Although it may take some time and effort to master relay wiring diagrams, once you understand the basics, you’ll find that it’s not as challenging as it seems. Taking the time to learn the symbols and their interpretations will save you a significant amount of time in the field and possibly prevent serious damage or injury too!
