How to Create a Simple Wiring Diagram for Light Switch
Light switches can be tricky to wire up, but with a simple wiring diagram, you can easily understand what needs to be done. Whether it’s an old circular switch or a modern digital touch switch, the same fundamentals still apply. In this article we’ll discuss how to create a basic light switch wiring diagram and even go over some of the more advanced wiring options.
Key Components of a Light Wiring Diagram
When creating a wiring diagram for your light switch, there are two main components to consider: the electrical source and the actual switch. The electrical source will come from either an outlet or from a circuit breaker box. It’s important to identify which type of power source you have since they require different wiring diagrams. Once you have identified the power source, you can move onto the actual switch.
A typical light switch wiring diagram consists of two wires. One will be labeled “Power” and the other “Switch.” The “Power” wire is fed directly from the circuit breaker box and needs to be connected to the light switch. The “Switch” wire is run from the light switch and needs to be connected to a light fixture.
Connecting the Power Supply to the Switch
Once you have identified the “Power” and “Switch” wires in the wiring diagram, you can then begin to connect them. The first step is to locate the power source. If your power source is an outlet, you will need to identify which two Black Hot wires are attached to the two terminals on the underside of the outlet. You should then attach a pigtail ground wire to the green screw on the underside of the outlet. This simply creates a larger contact for your wiring to connect to.
Once the power source has been identified, use your wire stripper to strip ¾ of an inch from each of the “Power” and “Switch” wires. Connect the stripped ends of the “Power” wire to the terminals on the underside of the outlet and the stripped end of the “Switch” wire to the terminal on the light switch. Now that the power source and switch are connected, you can move onto connecting the switch to the light fixture.
Connecting the Light Fixture to the Switch
The final step is to connect the light fixture to the switch. Begin by locating the Black Hot and White Neutral wires attached to the terminals on the underside of the light fixture. Use your wire stripper to strip ¾ of an inch from each of these as well. Take the stripped ends of the “Switch” wire and connect them to the terminals on the light fixture. Make sure that the “Power” wire always connects to the Black Hot wire and the “Switch” wire always connects to the White Neutral wire.
Once the light switch wiring diagram is complete, you can now turn the power back on and test the switch. If it works properly, you should be able to turn the light switch on and off with ease.
Final Notes
Creating a simple wiring diagram for light switch is not as difficult as it may seem. With a little bit of patience and some basic understanding of how electricity works, anyone can create an accurate wiring diagram. Before attempting any electrical work, however, make sure to turn off the power to the area and double-check your wiring connections.
