Understanding Wiring Diagrams for One Pickup Volume Control

Guitar wiring diagrams lay out the physical connections between various components of your guitar. It can sometimes be confusing for beginners to understand exactly how a typical guitar wiring diagram works, but understanding these is essential for achieving the sound and playability that you want from your instrument. This guide takes a detailed look at one particular setup: one pickup with independent volume control.

The versatility of rack-mounted units and guitar pedals has allowed players to create custom sounds like never before. Building your own custom tone is an exciting exploration of the possibilities, but for most, the idea of tinkering with electrical circuits and undefined terms like soldering and wiring can be daunting. Fortunately, being familiar with wiring diagrams will make it much easier to build the exact sound you're after.

Basics of a Wiring Diagram

A wiring diagram is designed to illustrate the flow of electronic signals and connection points within a guitar's circuitry. At first glance, it can seem confusing and indecipherable, but as you learn more about the basics of a wiring diagram you will begin to recognize the different symbols used.

Using symbols helps to make diagrams both easier to read and less space consuming. By becoming used to the structure of a wiring diagram symbols, you will find that it becomes easier and faster to identify and understand it. Common symbols used in diagrams include capacitors, potentiometers, switches, LEDs, jacks, and wires of all sizes.

Overview of One Pickup Volume Control Diagram

One pickup volume control wiring diagram connects a single pickup to the amplifier with an independent volume control. It features one pickup (the most common being single coil or humbucker), one linear potentiometer (volume control), two capacitor and Output Jack. Once you become familiar with the basics symbols of a typical wiring diagram this becomes simplified. A wire labeled “hot” is typically amplified signal, making this arrangement simple but effective.

This basic wiring diagram assumes the signal from the pickup is taken from the wire labeled "hot" and connected directly to the center terminal of the volume control. To keep signal from running through the pickup again, the other terminals of the volume control are wired in series with each other. The ones shown in the diagram are linear/audio taper which allows the same amount at any point over the control's range.

Components of Single Pickup Volume Control

Below are described the components required for building this circuit:

  • Pickup – This is the source of the amplified sound.

  • Potentiometer – This is used to adjust the volume.

  • Two Capacitors – These are used to reduce interference from external signals and ensure a steady signal comes through.

  • Output Jack – This is used to plug into the amplifier.

Conclusion

Wiring diagrams for pickups with an independent volume control can be tricky, but understanding the basics can make tackling this project a lot easier. With some study and practice, you can have your own unique custom built sounds in no time!
